I think it is a huge problem pertaining to most human societies with some or other religious cult (that is, all human societies at present) or another strong collectivist mainstream in the culture of a society.
Imagine what a society would look like if 99% of all kids were told, not "be humble, there is something greater than you", but "you are an end in yourself, be proud and strive for the greatest in you".
