That was the topic of my talk at Cisco as part of the “Beyond Code Tour” organized by NetIP San Francisco Chapter.
I have posted new album with photos from the talk at Flickr.
The theme of the talk was simple. There is a rapid acceleration in the
rate of change and it’s only going to get worse moving forward. We need
new skills to lead and manage in this new world. Also, the skills and
tools required for tomorrow may not even be available today. That means
it is imperative that we need to start learning how to learn rapidly so
that we are prepared to adapt tomorrow.
It was a fun group and there were a ton of questions. Sometime in the
future I will post a mindmap summarizing the key points from the talk.
It was mainly for the “Lead” chapter in “Beyond Code“

You’re really hit on a key point that the needed skills aren’t even identified yet, Rajesh. As humankind becomes more and more adept at the digital decomposition of products and services and delivering them to the market at the lowest quality-to-cost mix (see Thomas Friedman, The World Is Flat), each person must really scrutinize how they add value in the chain. As many of those decomposition processes are still works-in-process, we must pay close attention and stay nimble in order to figure out how and were we make our value contribution.
Thanks Kip. It was always the case that we needed to learn things on the go. Now the biggest difference is that we need to learn new things at a breathtaking speed. What would have made you successful today MAY not even let you get by tomorrow.
Thanks again.
Yes, yes and yes - times are changing, we have to learn quickly and we have to repsonde faster. All this begins to lean on another silent dynamic that is constantly at play which is in the realm on Self Integrity. I am reminded of the Hedgehog Concept by Jim Collins (www.jimcollins.com) - one of his ideas there is to identify what you are best in the world at doing and another is to identify what you are deeply passionate about.
My take is that being aware of these concepts - helps you make the right choices in rapidly changeing times. Otherwise responding to life might feel like kayaking down a Class 6 rapid with a waterfall fast approaching. So - Know thy truth at all times.
Just more light on the same subject. Love your work Rajesh. All the best.
